IDES, Integrated Data Analytics for Energy Systems, was designed to connect a functioning campus microgrid with computing resources for energy research. The NSF-supported infrastructure (opens in a new tab) addresses the processing speed, heterogeneous data sources, and real-time requirements of microgrid analytics.

The infrastructure design combines network devices, an integrated computer and file-server cluster, and software-defined microgrid communications. These resources bring high-performance data processing and storage into the microgrid's research environment.

The microgrid serves as a living laboratory for power-grid technologies, big data analytics, and cybersecurity. IDES also brings together power-system researchers, computer scientists, utilities, and technical partners, with student training in data processing, microgrids, networking, and security.
