Summer 2026 offers 15+ projects spanning quantum computing, agentic AI for HPC operations, GPU performance modeling, scientific AI workload benchmarking, container engineering, load balancing, and metascheduling. Projects of particular relevance to GRC students include: "Agentic AI for HPC Operations and Scientific AI Infrastructure", "Performance Benchmarking of Scientific AI Workloads for Next-Gen HPC Systems", "GPU Performance Modeling", "Improving AMReX Load Balancing Algorithms", "Spin Workload Analysis" (storage I/O focus), and "Container Images for the NERSC Programming Environment". Also part of the Computing Sciences Area summer program at LBNL.

How to Pursue These Opportunities

  1. Talk to your advisor about which opportunities align with your research direction and timeline.
  2. Most require faculty nomination: your advisor must submit on your behalf. Discuss well in advance.
  3. Start early: most applications take 2 to 4 weeks to prepare. A rushed application rarely wins.
  4. A strong research statement is the most important component. Invest time in articulating your vision.
  5. Publications matter: having peer-reviewed papers strengthens applications.
