The Michigan State University College of Engineering has presented Professor Xian-He Sun its Computer Science and Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award (opens in a new tab), at a ceremony on May 7, 2022.
A Foundation for Excellence
Professor Sun earned his Ph.D. from Michigan State University, where he developed the foundational expertise that has shaped decades of sustained research in parallel computing, memory systems, and storage optimization.
Contributions to the Field
Throughout his career, Professor Sun has made fundamental contributions that have changed how we understand and design computing systems:
- Sun-Ni's Law: A generalization of Amdahl's Law that better captures performance scaling in memory-bounded applications
- C-AMAT Model: A framework for analyzing memory access performance in concurrent systems
- Hermes: A multi-tiered I/O buffering system for heterogeneous storage
